About TRUE Independence Day

The Gulf Coast oil spill has brought to light our DEPENDENCE. Dependence on:

  • Oil companies;
  • Morally bankrupt, ineffective, short-sighted political leaders, unwilling to tell us about, and deal with, the hard truths; and
  • A media that does nothing to help regular people sort through the buffoonery that passes for political dialogue.

WE’RE MAD AS HELL AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! (For at least one day…)

ON JULY 4, 2010, WE DECLARE IT TO BE A *TRUE* INDEPENDENCE DAY. FOR ONE ENTIRE DAY, WE WILL BOYCOTT *ALL* GAS STATIONS. NOT JUST BPs. DON’T BUY GAS!

The economy, the people, and the ecosystem of an entire region of our country are being destroyed while we sit powerless to make the changes necessary to save ourselves from ourselves and be FREE from oil addiction, suburban sprawl, and a government captured by corporate interests.

We want to send a symbolic message to our leaders that we demand change, we demand a habitable planet for our children, we demand clean energy, we demand FREEDOM from greed and stupidity.

TRUE Independence Day, TRUE patriotism. If you love your country you will send a message this July 4th: that you want to be FREE!

SPREAD THE WORD! Invite everyone you know — this is a movement and a statement that will only have an impact if everyone joins in and call your legislator at 877-762-8762 and demand aggressive, real, clean, energy policy the lessens are reliance on oil.

We do not we receive any money from any organization, nor are we associated with any organization, energy, environmental, or otherwise. We are simply citizens outraged by the situation in the Gulf of Mexico, along with the federal government’s lack of oversight when it comes to offshore drilling, and the oil industry’s practice of cutting corners, endangering lives, commerce, and wildlife.

    Please do spread the word. We need as many people as possible to make a real statement.

    TRUE Independence Day asks all Americans not to buy gas from any source on July 4. TRUE Independence springs from American grassroots revulsion at what BP and the federal government have done before and during the Gulf oil spill. Nearly every day brings new revelations about Big Oil and its regulators’ actions: risky, cruel, heedless, obtuse, so stupid they give stupidity a bad name.

    Born of outraged late-night Facebook ruminations by ordinary American ten days ago, TRUE Independence Day asks Americans to make a vivid symbolic gesture against our national self-induced dependence on oil, its producers and the shabby politics it requires.

    TRUE Independence Day means no to harm innocent small gas stations: their customers will simply buy gas on July 3 or 5. The July 4 boycott seeks to inform the nation of what oil has cost us and will keep costing us if we continue to rely on it. The boycott asks the nation to consider further, harder, more long-term actions after July 4.
